JPG to PNG questions, answered
Does converting JPG to PNG lose quality?
No. PNG is a lossless format, so it stores every pixel of your JPG exactly as it is. Converting cannot restore detail that JPG compression already removed, but nothing further is lost.
Will the PNG have a transparent background?
Not automatically. JPG files cannot contain transparency, so the converted PNG shows the same solid background as the original. PNG supports transparency though, so after converting you can remove the background in any image editor.
Why is the PNG bigger than my JPG?
That is normal. JPG shrinks photos by discarding fine detail, while PNG keeps every pixel. For photographs the PNG is usually several times larger. If you need small web images, JPG or WebP is the better target format.
Can I convert many JPG files at once?
