How to count words
Paste or type
Drop your essay, article or post into the input. Every metric updates live with each keystroke.
Read the numbers
Words, characters with and without spaces, sentences, paragraphs and lines are all counted at once.
Check the time estimates
Reading time assumes 225 words per minute, speaking time 150 - the standard figures used for articles and speeches.
Word counting questions, answered
Is my text sent to a server?
No. Counting happens as you type, entirely in your browser. Essays, manuscripts and confidential reports are never uploaded.
How is a word counted?
Anything separated by whitespace counts as a word, the same rule word processors use. Numbers and abbreviations count as one word each.
How accurate is the reading time?
It uses the widely accepted 225 words per minute for silent reading. Slow, technical material reads slower; light fiction faster. Speaking time uses 150 wpm - the pace of a clear presentation.
Does it work for essays with a word limit?
Yes - that is the main use. The word count matches what Google Docs and Word report, so a 500-word limit checked here will match your submission.
