WebP to PNG questions, answered
Why convert WebP to PNG?
PNG opens everywhere: older photo editors, office software, printing services and systems that never learned WebP. Converting gives you a file that simply works in every program.
Does the conversion lose quality?
No. PNG is lossless, so every pixel of the decoded WebP is stored exactly. The conversion cannot restore detail that lossy WebP compression already removed, but nothing further is lost.
Is transparency preserved?
Yes. PNG supports the same alpha transparency as WebP, so transparent areas stay transparent.
What about animated WebP files?
Only the first frame is converted. PNG is a still image format, so an animation cannot be carried over. For animations, a video format is usually the better target.
Why is the PNG bigger than the WebP?
That is expected. WebP compresses more aggressively than PNG, so the lossless PNG copy is usually larger. The optimization setting reduces the gap.
Are my images uploaded to a server?
No. Decoding and re-encoding happen inside your browser. Your images never reach a server - the conversion works even offline once the page is loaded.
