AVIF to JPG questions, answered
What is an AVIF file and why do I have one?
AVIF is the newest mainstream image format, built on the AV1 video codec. Big sites serve it because it is far smaller than JPG at the same quality, so images you save from the web increasingly land on your disk as .avif.
Why won't my software open AVIF?
The format is young. Photoshop needs a plugin, older Windows viewers need a codec, and plenty of upload forms, printers and office tools simply refuse it. JPG remains the format that works absolutely everywhere.
Does converting AVIF to JPG lose quality?
There is a one-time re-encode at your chosen quality; the default of 85 is visually transparent. Detail that AVIF's own compression already removed cannot be restored, but nothing visible is lost on top.
What happens to transparency?
JPG cannot store transparency, so transparent regions are flattened onto a background color of your choice, white by default. If you need the alpha channel preserved, use AVIF to PNG instead.
Why is the JPG larger than the AVIF?
Because AVIF compresses better; that is its whole point. A moderate size increase after conversion is normal and is the price of universal compatibility.
Are my images uploaded to a server?
No. Decoding and encoding run entirely inside your browser, so your files never leave your device.
