BMP to JPG questions, answered
How much smaller will my file get?
BMP stores every pixel uncompressed, so the drop is dramatic: a 20 MB bitmap typically becomes a JPG of one or two megabytes at default quality, and photos often shrink by 95% or more with no visible difference.
Where do BMP files even come from these days?
Mostly from Windows: old versions of Paint, print-screen workflows, scanner software and legacy industrial or medical tools still write BMP. The format works, it is just enormously wasteful to store or send.
Does converting BMP to JPG lose quality?
JPG compresses lossily, so there is a one-time quality trade. At the default setting of 85 the difference is invisible for photos and scans. For screenshots with sharp text, BMP to PNG is the lossless alternative.
Can I email or upload a BMP instead of converting it?
Often not comfortably: many forms reject BMP outright, and mail providers choke on multi-megabyte attachments. JPG uploads everywhere and arrives instantly.
