Fraction questions, answered

Is my data sent to a server?

No. The fraction arithmetic runs in your browser - homework in, answer out, no server in between.

How are fractions added?

By finding a common denominator: 1/2 + 1/3 becomes 3/6 + 2/6 = 5/6. The tool does this and reduces the result to lowest terms automatically.

Why does dividing by a fraction make numbers bigger?

Dividing by 1/4 asks how many quarters fit - four fit in every whole. Mechanically you multiply by the reciprocal: ÷ 1/4 = × 4.

What is an improper fraction?

One whose numerator exceeds its denominator, like 7/4. It equals the mixed number 1 3/4 - both are shown so you can use either form.
