Which sizes should I include?
For a website favicon, 16, 32 and 48 pixels cover browser tabs, address bars and bookmarks, and that is the default here. For Windows application icons, add 64 and 256 so the icon stays sharp at every zoom level.
Can one ICO file really contain several sizes?
Yes, that is the point of the format. Each selected size is rendered separately into the file, and the operating system or browser picks the best one for the context.
Is transparency supported?
Yes. Transparent areas of your source image stay transparent in the icon, and non-square images are centered with transparent padding rather than stretched.
What source image works best?
A square PNG with transparency, ideally 256 pixels or larger, gives the cleanest result. JPG and WebP work too. Fine details disappear at 16 pixels, so simple bold shapes make the best small icons.
Will the ICO work in all browsers and Windows versions?
Yes. The icons are stored as PNG data inside the ICO container, which every modern browser and every Windows version since Vista understands.
