Which sizes should my favicon.ico contain?
16, 32 and 48 pixels cover browser tabs, address bars, bookmarks and Windows shortcuts, and they are the defaults here. Browsers and Windows automatically pick the best size from the single .ico file.
My PNG is not square. What happens?
Icons are square by definition, so the image is fitted inside the square and the remaining space stays transparent. For best results, crop your logo square before converting.
Is transparency preserved?
Yes. Each size inside the ICO is stored as a PNG with its alpha channel intact, so rounded corners and cut-outs render cleanly on any tab or desktop background.
What source resolution should the PNG have?
At least as large as the biggest size you tick, so nothing is upscaled: 48 pixels or more for the defaults, 256 or more if you include the largest size. Bigger sources are simply downscaled sharply.
Do modern sites still need a .ico favicon?
PNG favicons are widely supported now, but favicon.ico remains the one file every browser, crawler and bookmark system understands, and many tools request /favicon.ico unconditionally. Shipping one is still best practice.
Is my logo uploaded anywhere?
No. The icon is assembled entirely inside your browser; your artwork never leaves your device.
